The Higher Ecclesiastical School of Athens is part
of the Tertiary Public Education System and belongs administratively to the
Ministry of Education. It operates under the hospices of the School Board that
is presided by his Eminence, Panteleymon, Metropolitan of Attica.
Who gets admitted to the School and how:
Those who graduate from the School can enter other
Tertiary Schools and Universities without any additional examinations. As members
of the clergy, they belong to the highest paying category level. The School
faculty consists of tenure professors with doctorate degrees, visiting professors
with the same credentials and university members.
Student figures for the year 2000/2001 are: 1st year: 96 students, 2nd year:
63, 3rd year: 55. Total number of students: 214.
History
of the School :
Important dates in the evaluation of the School are as follows:
1. 1968: founded as a one-year higher clerical tutorial, based on the island of Tenos
2. 1971: attached administratively under the Church of Greece like the rest of the ecclesiastical Schools
3. 1972: its base is moved to Athens and its name is changed to "School of Clerical Studies". The School is housed in a building that belongs to the Archdiocese of Athens in the suburb of Aghia Paraskevi
4. 1973: the duration of the studies is increased from one to three years
5. 1976: the School falls again under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education
6. 1977: the name of the School is changed of what is currently known as "Ecclesiastical School of Athens"
7. 1978: the School is relocated to Kifissia, where it has been since housed in a building that belongs to the Holy Diocess of Attica.

The School of Byzantine Music operates at the Holy
Diocess of Attica. The first one operates under the administration of the protopresbyter
Chris Kyriakopoulos, tel: 8013195, in Kifissia.
